Call for Artists

The Orange County Arts Council is developing a program in conjunction with the System of Care to help at-risk youth and their families battling a variety of adversities by harnessing the influence of professionally trained artists who wish to share their knowledge and experience. With support from the mental health field, the Arts Council provides hands on mentorship training, educational arts workshops, and real life opportunities to perform and create.

• Artists participating must
o be professionals who exhibit high artistic quality,
o have experience working with youth,
o be able to write and present an art lesson or curriculum plan in an organized manner and appreciate and respond effectively to students who come from impoverished and complex social environments,
o be able to integrate the arts across a curriculum that conveys social messages to encourage positive behaviors,
o readily agree to participate in training to acquire the skills needed to work with youth at risk,
o work well in collaboration and partnership with other art teachers, educators, and caseworkers.
• Orange County artists are asked to submit
o no more than four JPEG images, mp3 files, video clips or writing samples of their work,
o an artist statement of no more than 100 words on their approach to teaching,
o artist resume indicating teaching experience,
o 25 word description of workshop to be presented (maximum three different workshops), and
o email address, website address and mailing address and telephone.

Artists must be willing to participate in a “certification” process by participating in a series of free classes offered by the Orange County Youth Bureau that will help them to prepare for working with at-risk youth and their families. Please be aware that taking part in these classes does not assure the artist of a guaranteed teaching assignment and that additional training may be recommended.

Deadline to submit materials: May 10, 2010. Send to slinn@ocartscouncil.org. No phone calls, please.
