RiversideClayton Buchanan Artist Statement/Work Statement;
I am fascinated with the diverse nature of lifestyles; the real life compositions, frozen in time, of human expression and movement. My goal is to capture the reality of life through my interpretations of the human figure, share that vision, and broaden the acceptance of humanity’s differences through visual stimulation. Pastels are my painting medium. The direct application of color gives the surface texture I want. I look for the intimacy of a scene; those elements that allow me to enter into, and have emotional
contact. I use the digital camera to capture and freeze those reference moments; the computer to crop the image/determine composition, heighten the specific light condition, depth of field, and remembered bits of the scene. I also work from life to underscore the 3-dimensional structure when working from
photos. I photograph in public space, and do not pose compositions. The reference
photos I use are real life figurative situations captured at random. I keep open minded on
a photo shoot, and seldom have preconceptions concerning direction. The scene in front
of me drives the creative process.

images are “Blue Goggles”- 42×27 and “Riverside”- 24×42.
