June/July Meeting – a Special Open Studio Event

Our June/July meeting takes place on Sunday, June 27, from 2-4 pm. This meeting will not be held at its regular location: instead we are offering an opportunity for WAL members to visit the studio of artist Claudia Pflueger.

For this special event, Claudia Pflueger will demonstrate all the stages of production and show all the tools she uses. In addition, Claudia will also include a demonstration of pine needle coiling.

Because this program will be held in the artist’s studio, attendance is limited to the first 25 members who sign up. To make a reservation email the Warwick Art League.

Middletown Art Group Demonstration Sunday

Middletown Art Group Sunday at the Senior Center, 70 West Main St., Middletown , NY, Feb.21 1:30 PM, Demonstration by Joan Kehlenbeck.

Joan earned an Associates Degree in Applied Science with a major in Art from Orange County Community College. Along with her numerous exhibits, demonstrations and workshops, she is owner and manager of “Romantic Silk Florals” and is currently President of River Valley Artists Guild.

For her demonstration “Illusion of Motion in Pastel,” she will recreate an ocean scene.

Joan is currently having an exhibit, “Hopeless Romantic” at Kate’s Café, 79 Pike St., Port Jervis, NY during the month of February.

The Warwick Art League will hold the November meeting on Sunday November 1, from 2-4pm at the Seligmann Homestead, 23 White oak Drive, Sugar Loaf, NY. (click here for map)

Artists Alice Harrison and Susan G Hammond will do a presentation from their book, “Artists’ Guidebook To a New Creative Life”, followed by a demonstration by Alice Harrison of her collage methods.

Alice Harrison’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries and universities throughout the United States and

also has been shown in Europe and New Zealand. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards. The artist’s paintings are found in many private collections as well as public and corporate collections.
She has also received several Geraldine R. Dodge grants, and is included in 2000 Outstanding Artists and Designers of the 20th Century, published in England.

Susan G. Hammond is a contemporary photographer, who was born in NYC. She relocated with her husband to the hills of New Jersey approximately 14 years ago. Susan enjoys capturing divergent images using her Canon 35mm camera, Mamiya 645AFD Medium Format Camera, and two digital Cameras (Sigma SD10 and Canon XTI). She enjoys capturing reflective images as metaphors for her eclectic view of the world. Susan uses traditional dark room and digital darkroom processes for final renderings of her photography.

Susan enjoys documentary work, capturing landscapes and figurative studies, but prefers capturing emotions, portraits, and symbolic images representing the darker side of life. 98% of her work is in Black and White, as she feels they exude feelings and emotions, rather than being surprised and enamored by colors. Robert Maxwell said it the best when he stated that a “good photograph consists of using three things: your eyes, your mind and your heart.” Susan focuses on these concepts.

What Susan chooses to photograph is her personal statement. It is her description of what she sees. It is her language and expression. It tells the world who she is and where she is on her journey. She feels that there is a photograph in every blink of an eye. She enjoys doing series work that is open ended, rather than projects that have beginnings and endings.

In 2008 Susan started a collaboration with fellow artist Alice Harrison on a book entitled, “Artists’ Guidebook To a New Creative Life”. WAL Meeting and Demo this Sunday

Susan Hope Fogel a member of the Pastel Society of America, will be giving a pastel demonstration for The WAL on

Sunday, September 6, in the Senior Room, behind Warwick Town Hall(132 Kings Highway) from 2PM-4PM.

The focus will be on developing form through chromatic progression with various pastel techniques.

Materials will be discussed including different surfaces that may be used for pastel painting.

Safety and health issues will also be discussed.

Susan is currently teaching drawing and painting principles at her art school, The Warwick Atelier, in which students learn

pastel and oil painting as part of the curriculum.

She is exhibiting her paintings at galleries in Santa Fe, Boston and Cape Cod.

Charles Brandenburg to demo for Middletown Art Group

Sunday, September 20, 1:30 pm, at the Middletown Center, 70 West Main St., Charles “Brandy” Brandenburg, an accomplished artist who works in acrylics, oils, watercolor and pen and inks will give a demonstration for the Middletown Art Group Meeting.. He is best known for his portrayal of landscapes and outdoor scenes, which capture the simple and sublime beauty of the natural world with a rugged authenticity that demonstrates a deep understanding and appreciation of land and sea. Artist and instructor Marie Liu will share her unique approach to understanding the creative process. While ‘evolving an idea” the mind goes through different stages. Understanding this can empower not only artists – but people in all fields. Through lecture and discussion the unconscious process will be revealed. Fun and simple drawing exercises will reinforce our awareness and explore tools of visual language to actualize these ideas.

Warwick Artists Open Studios

Beginning this month, the Orange County Arts Council and Orange County Tourism have teamed up to create a new kind of Open Studio experience for tourists and for the local community. While private artist studios around the county are open to the public for select hours, the artists of the Warwick area are banding together to provide an ongoing weekend experience of the arts in our community. The Warwick artists are providing a map of open studios for that weekend ramble through the countryside. You can take a weekend drive to visit one or more studios, or take a grand tour of all studios. Most studios are open for mid-day Sunday hours, and a few are open on Saturday only. Check the map available at the Chamber of Commerce for open studio hours. Maps will be available at individual studios as well. Pastel Demonstration by Timothy John-Luke Smith

On Sunday May 3rd from 2:30 – 4:30 pm, the Warwick Art League will host a portrait demonstration by the award winning artist Timothy John-Luke Smith, PSA at the Seligmann Homestead, 23 White Oak Drive, Sugar Loaf, NY . (directions here)

Timothy studied at the Art Students League under George Passantino and at the National Academy School of Fine Arts under Harvey Dinnerstein. Soon after, he received a full-tuition scholarship at the Academy. Harvey taught him pastels as a painting medium and they were immediately embraced by the Timothy. Having been in Harvey’s classes for over three years, gave him the tools to be an artist and to work on his own. His favorite artists are still the oil painters of the Neo-Classical and French Academic schools and his pastel paintings have the look and feel of an oil painting. Timothy is the founder of his own movement he calls, “Neo-Meso Americanism. This movement is affected by the recent discoveries of whole Mayan cities from the Late Classic Period, as well as , the deciphered glyphs from those same cities. These discoveries are all within the last 15 years! Just as the 18th century archaeologists discovered the ancient Roman Cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum from the volcanic ashes of Mount Vesuvius at 79 AD, the jungles of Central America had lifted their vail from the ancient Mayan cities of Palenque, Calakmul and Copan. The 19th century artists painted the ancient Roman world as Timothy, today paints the ancient Mayan world. He is able to read and write ancient Mayan glyphs and they are in his paintings. “This gives the work some of the mystery that is The Maya.” Timothy says.
