An Unexpected Loss

Elaine M. Garvin, Watercolourist, died unexpectedly Sunday, November 15, with her son Edward P. Dusek by her side. Elaine is survived also by her husband, Claus Botjer and her five step-children and seven step-grandchildren. She will be missed by Nancy and John Riordan and John Jr. and Dennis, John Botjer, Pat Botjer, Heather Botjer and Hannah and Paige, Michael and Gina Botjer and Emma, Amanda and Mia. Born in the Bronx on January 17, 1947, Elaine is predeceased by her parents, William P. and Audrey M. Garvin (nee Porteus) and her sister, Lorry. Elaine is survived by her sister Audrey and her husband, Melvin, and brother Bill Garvin and Lorry’s partner, Doris McCaffrey. Sharing in their grief are her five nephews Jon, Brad, Matt and Will and two great nephews Anthony and Jayden. We will miss Elaine’s Thanksgiving feast and apple pies she made just like her Mother. Lola will miss keeping Elaine company and protecting her at night.Elaine has many relatives and friends shocked by her sudden death. Mary and John Cashin and Kevin and Joanne Dowd have been her lifelong friends from Cardinal Spellman class of 1965. A graduate of Fashion Institute of Technology, Elaine was employed as a buyer at Abraham and Strauss in Brooklyn and helped to open the A&S in Paramus, NJ. A resident of Fort Lee and Teaneck, NJ, Elaine owned and operated White Glove Cleaning for many years until her art muse inspired her to paint. A member of Pascack Art Association and a signature Board member of the North East Watercolor Society (NEWS), Elaine volunteered to organize, show, teach, raise funds and establish relationships with members, organizations and vendors. Living in Warwick for the past decade, Elaine taught private art lessons in her studio and at Elderhostel at the Warwick Art Center. Elaine will be remembered as a gracious and generous woman, in recognition of her many volunteer hours for NEWS, an award in her name will be established to be presented at the annual international art show in Kent, CT. Donations can be sent c/o Richard Price, NEWS President, at P.O. Box 10582, Newburgh, NY 12552.Visitation will be at the T.S. Purta Funeral Home, 22 Glenmere Ave., Florida, NY, on Thursday 7 – 9 p.m., Friday 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m.. A brief service will be held Friday at 8:30 p.m. A family gathering will take place on Saturday at 9 a.m.. Burial services will be graveside at 11 a.m. at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.

The Plein Air Painting Workshop Experience

I would like to inform you of a plein air workshop

that I will be leading as part of The Warwick Grove Artist Series.
The workshop will take place (outdoors) at Warwick Grove in Warwick, NY, on

Saturday, October 3 from 9AM-12PM (raindate Saturday, October 10)

Topics we will focus on will be :

prismatic progression, values, composition, edges

and how these enhance atmospheric effects in landscape painting.

The cost is $25.00 for the three hour workshop,

On Sunday, June 28th, the Closing Reception and Awards Presentation for the 55th Annual Warwick Art League Members’ Exhibition was held at Gallery Warwick. Congratulations to the winners!

New Warwick Atelier Classes!

The Introduction of Plein Air Tuesdays (in Oil or Pastel) will begin on June 16.
These two classes will replace the regular tuesday morning(10-1) and evening classes(6:30-9:30PM)
through September.

The morning plein air class will meet from 9 AM-11 AM.(Locations to be announced weekly)
and the sunset class from 6:30PM-8:30PM.
The fee for each class, for currently enrolled Atelier students, is $10.00 per session.
The fee for non-students is $20.00 per session.
This will be a pay as we go.
If you are interested in either of these classes please contact me
via e-mail (preferred) or phone(845-986-0986).
I will send you a materials list.

Wednesday afternoon Children’s class will begin August 5. (3:30-5PM)
Please let me know if your child is interested.
4 Wednesdays-$60.00.
Reminder: Current Classes -Wednesday and Thursday morning 10AM-1PM
and Wednesday evening from 7-10PM continue as scheduled through the week of July 7- 9.
No classes from July 14 to July 28.

Two Wallkill River School Events on Saturday

“Orange Goes Green” the 2nd annual Earth & Water Festival, Sat. June 13, 11am-5pm at Thomas Bull Park off Route 416 in Montgomery.(further down from the Arboretum, before the dog run)
This is a very fun event with a farmer’s market, green expo, live music, food, and speakers including WRS Director Shawn Dell Joyce talking about Eating Local and our cookbook!
Stop in and say “hi” at the WRS table!

Mary Mugele Sealfon and Steve Blumenthal at the Wallkill River School in Montgomery. Both artists will be demonstrating their painting techniques live on Sat. June 13th from 5pm-7pm. Wine and hors d’oevres will be served, event is free and open to the public. Exhibit runs from June 1-30, Tues.–Sun., 9am-6pm. Introducing emerging artist Carmen Santo in a solo exhibit in the workshop room.
