For Dia’s series of Community Free Days, residents of Orange County are invited to visit Dia:Beacon free of charge. Residents should present a valid driver’s license, voter registration card, or other government-issued ID for free entry to the museum for a day of special programs.

12:00pm
Gallery Talk: Building Dia:Beacon. Steven Evans, Assistant Director for Beacon, will discuss the transformation of Dia:Beacon from a former Nabisco box printing facility into an internationally acclaimed museum for Dia Art Foundation’s collection that is now listed on the State and National Register of Historical Places. The talk will begin in the forecourt of the museum.

1:00pm
Guided Tours of Dia’s collection will begin in the main entrance to the museum.

2:00pm
Family Day: Line, Rhythm, Chance. Dia:Beacon educators will lead families on a guided exploration through the museum with movement-based learning. Family Day will begin in the Imi Knoebel galleries.
Open to children age six and above accompanied by an adult.

Community Free Days at Dia:Beacon
For Dia’s series of Community Free Days, residents of neighboring counties are invited to visit Dia:Beacon free of charge on selected Saturdays throughout the year. The dates are chosen to alternate year-to-year, offering residents of each county an opportunity to experience the range of seasons at the museum. The dates coincide with “Second Saturday Beacon,” a monthly city-wide arts and culture open house. Upcoming Community Free Days include Putman County on October 10th and Ulster County on December 12th.

A new store and gallery space, Dream in Plastic, is opening in Beacon, NY. They are celebrating their grand opening, Saturday August 8th, and will also be hosting their very first gallery exhibit: Analog – A Plastic Camera Photo Exhibit.

They are still accepting entries for the show. If you are a plastic camera photographer, email Dream in Plastic for more information.

Submission guidelines:
- No larger than 24″ in either direction.
- Ready to hang, with proper framing. No alligator clips please.
- Multiple submissions accepted.
- Photographs will be available for sale.
- Photograph MUST have been taken with a plastic or toy camera!
- Any subject matter accepted.
- You are not required to attend the show to have your work included.

A Film at Good Question Gallery on Saturday, July 11th-6:30pm

Good Question Gallery, located at 210 East Harford Street in nearby Milford, PA, will be screening a documentary entitled “A Homecoming Spectacle” this weekend, followed by a talk by the filmmaker. For directions to the gallery from Warwick, click here. This is also the last weekend to catch their group show, Abridged Abstract (show closes Sunday).

A Homecoming Spectacle

A Film by Sunanda K Sanyal

The documentary examines specific aspects of the visual culture of Durga Pujo, a grand religio-cultural festival held in West Bengal, India. Locally, it is seen as the occasion of the Hindu Goddess Durga’s annual visit to her parental home. Central to the rituals is a sculptural image of the Goddess killing Mahisasura, or the buffalo-demon. This mythic event is considered a symbol of the eternal battle between Good and Evil, and of female empowerment.

While examining some of the temporary public spectacles/installations produced for the event by professional artists, the film explores the currently evolving hybrid, globalizing character of the festival, where fragmented, cross-cultural signs override notions of cultural authenticity; yet also celebrates —in a seemingly paradoxical gesture — indigenous traditions and sentiments. Throughout this inquiry, a personalized narrative also reflects on the notions of home, homecoming, and legacy.

Capture The Light

“Capture the Light” a follow-up exhibit of mixed media paintings created in the workshops of Clayton Buchanan and Mary Mugele Sealfon is sponsored by the Orange County Art Federation.

It will be on display from May 16th though June 6th in the Kurt Seligmann Studio at 23 White Oak Drive in Sugarloaf, NY.

The opening reception will be from 5p –7p on May 16th.
