The constant inspiration for Susan remains the quality of light enveloping a subject. It is this quality that transforms our world, resonates within and inspires this artist.
While living in New York City Susan studied classical drawing at the New York Academy of Art. With drawing skills and this experience deepened her desire for further study in figurative painting. She pursued those studies at The Art Students League and The National Academy of Design. A move out of the city to the Hudson Valley led her to study the landscape and still life with John Osborne, at The Ridgewood Art Institute (NJ). A fascination with North Light and plein air painting took root at RAI. The next step in this artful journey occurred after working in a Harlem (NY) studio with a group of watercolorists who were studying with Paul Ching-Bor. Their work, in the style of Deconstruction, inspired her to explore the possibilities of this new art form.
Susan has led plein air workshops in Warwick (NY), Cape Cod, Italy and Ireland. She has exhibited in galleries throughout the country and is currently represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY, and The Art Suite gallery in Piermont, NY. As an award-winning artist she has participated in several group juried shows including, The American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi, American Artists Professional League and The Hudson Valley Art Association.
A feature article in American Artist Magazine, and another in the American Artist magazine special edition, Step-by-Step Guide focused on her North light oil painting techniques. A review of a solo exhibition of oils at Kenridge Farm and another, a profile, appeared in Art Times Journal. Splash 19 includes her watercolor painting, 68th Street I.
She is currently teaching pastel/oil painting in Ridgewood Art Institute’s north lit studios, as well as Experimental Watercolor techniques in her Warwick, NY, studio.
