Drawing Workshop by Oscar Beck (4/15)

The drawing workshop by artist, Oscar Beck, Sunday, April 15th at 1:30 pm, at the Warwick Senior Center, will focus primarily upon shading techniques instrumental in creating a realistic and expressive drawing. Students will employ the following procedures.

They will be introduced to graphite dust, a powdery material which they will use to cover selected sections of their drawing. They will spread the dust with tissue paper. The charcoal dust will speed up the shading process and provide an even tone to the paper, very much like an underpainting on the surface of the canvas.

Students will then execute a simple pencil drawing based on photographs which will be provided or which the students can provide.

They will cover selected areas of the drawing with a contact paper stencil. Further layers of graphite dust will then be applied to the exposed areas of the drawing paper. The graphite dust and pencils will then be used to enhance the shading and the details of the drawing.

Battery powered erasers as well as standard erasers will be used to enhance the highlighted areas of the drawing.

Experimentation with new tools and materials will make the workshop an educational and entertaining experience. A variety of other techniques will further the creative dimension of the workshop.

Students should bring their own pencils, erasers and sketch pads if possible. The instructor will also provide the necessary materials in the event of a shortage.

Non-members are welcome. There is a $10 fee for non-members.
